THE LONDON Borough of Sutton recruits adopters to meet the needs of our children.
The children will need special nurturing and care to overcome their feelings about their past experiences, many whom have suffered neglect and all have suffered a loss - the loss of their birth family.
We are especially looking for adopters who have the time and space to adopt siblings. There are not many babies waiting for adoptive families but children who are pre-school and school age do need families.
All types of people can be adopters. We need people from all walks of life and backgrounds who not only have the commitment, patience, love and energy required, but also have a real understanding of children's needs.
You will need to be able to care for children where the reward may not be immediate and be able to give support into adulthood and beyond.
Sutton is part of the South West London Adoption Consortium with three of our neighbouring boroughs; Kingston, Richmond and Merton. We work together to recruit adopters to meet the needs of the children in our care. We share resources and training including information evenings and preparation training groups.
It would be useful for you to attend an information evening where you will learn more about adoption, the children needing families and their backgrounds and the support you will get from your social workers.
The assessment process should take about six months and there are two stages, which include information sharing and training as well as the in-depth assessment and then, hopefully, Panel for approval.
