| The impact of family structure on children |

THE CHANGES in family structure that children experience during their lives are not without consequences.
Western societies have found that children from homes where the father is absent manifest a number of internalised and externalised problem behaviours, including depression, delinquency, aggression, sex role difficulties, early initiation of sexual activity and teen pregnancy, as well as poor social and adaptive functioning and low selfesteem, as reported by Princeton sociologist Sara McLanahan.
