ANGRY: Mourners gather outside city hospital where the men were taken

THERE ARE fears that an accident in which three men died after being hit by a car in Birmingham early today could heighten tension within the community.

West Midlands Police are treating the three deaths as murder and have arrested one man following the crash at 1am today on Dudley Road, Winson Green. One man has been arrested.

Two of the men in their early 30s are brothers, named locally as Shahzad and Harry Hussain. The third was a friend, and they lived just yards from the accident outside a petrol station. A friend said they had just left their local mosque to go and guard their car wash business against looters.

He said: “There were popular lads, who worked hard setting up their own business. There’s a lot of anger about what has happened – the community has had enough.”

CRIME SCENE: Dudey Road, Birmingham where three men lost their lives

This was echoed by Liberal Democrat councillor Ayoub Khan, who was talking to community leaders at the scene today. He said: “This is a tragedy for the area and sadly I can only see this incident making racial tensions worse within the community.”

There were emotional scenes outside nearby City Hospital where the three men were taken early today. A crowd of up to 200 mourners gathered as distraught relatives emerged sobbing from the hospital.

Dudley road, near the junction of Winson Street, remained closed for most of the morning as police gathered evidence.

Elsewhere, Birmingham witnessed a second night of looting in the city centre where the Mailbox shopping centre was transformed into a fortress protected by lines of riot police. The Bullring shopping complex shut early last night as Birmingham became a ghost town. West Midlands Police says they made a total of 109 arrests.

Earlier West Midlands Chief Constable Chris Sims said: “This was not an angry crowd. This was a greedy crowd.”

Handsworth remained quiet following a meeting yesterday between police, councillors and community leaders where everyone appealed for calm.

Chief Inspector Sean Russell said at the meeting: “This is a vibrant community that is standing up for itself.”

In West Bromwich gangs of hooded youths ran amok yesterday evening, with similar scenes in Wolverhampton’s Queen Street where dozens of shops were ransacked causing thousands of pounds worth of damage. One shop owner said she saw teenage girls among the crowd of 200 carrying hammers

The three Asian men murdered during the rioting is a disgrace and anyone says otherwise is scum but lets be clear the whole black community did not kill them as believe it or not there are law abidding citizens among us also and who are hard working. I do not nor do any other black people I know receive handouts or benefits in fact some do two jobs and pay taxes twice. The whole black community is not going around robbing innocent old women, these are lone acts of thiefs. Does this mean that all Asians are terroists and the men grooming white girls for sexual abuse among thier male communities. That is all bull too! Tarnishing all people with the same brush is just ignorant and displays a deep seated hatred.

Nobody has the licence to kill just cause or not. The police are human beings some of them with families who are doing a job. They are allowed to shoot if they have reason to believe that they or their colleagues lives are under threat. It may not have been the case that Mark Duggan fired his gun but he did have a gun which can be fired even from the inside of a sock. Some young men are hunting each other down in packs where there is no danger to life other than someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time. A few weeks ago there was a Crimewatch episode where they reconstructed the killing of a young black teenager using real CCTV footage. He was chased down by other black teens on bikes and bravely stopped to face his attackers to allow his younger brother to escape. Their lives were not under threat but they beat him to the ground and then brutally stabbed him multiple times until he died. In my opinion there should be a lot more outrage about these types of incidents. Despite the CCTV images and the £20,000 award offered as far as I'm aware no-one has come forward to identify any of the perpetrators and I find this more disgusting than the words of David Starkey or the death of Mark Duggan.

I have the utmost respect for Tariq Jahan who clearly saw the dangers of a reprise attack and immediately spoke to his community to ask them not to take action in his son's name. There was also the suggestion of a peace march and he again came out and stated that he did not want this to happen in his son's name. He clearly had the foresight to see a march under the current circumstances given the racial tension could be incendiary and lead to more violence.

I sympathise with the family of Mark Duggan but I still cannot understand given the historical troubles in Tottenham and the awareness that tensions within the community were already high why the decision was made to march to the police station at 5.30pm and not earlier in the day. I also do not understand why it was not just the immediate family and a few close friends. I'm not saying that the police are blameless but maybe they would have been more likely to come out and communicate if there had been fewer numbers. I can't remember his name but the main organiser who described himself as a community leader claimed to have warned the police that if they as protesters were still on the street after 9pm that there would certainly be trouble.
I as a black person also question why there is not this level of anger and protest when many young black males are killed at the hands of other young black males, as well as those who have been killed and injured including children because they were through no fault of their own in the wrong place at the wrong time.

No 'race' or 'community' is responsible for the murders of Haroon Jahan, Shazad Ali, and Abdul Musavir. The driver of the vehicle that hit them is. This person must be found, held publicly accountable for this heinous crime, chastised by all, and then severely punished by law.

Anonymous's picture

How this murder is being reported is clearly subject to censorship for fears of reprisals. On Tuesday, the media would only document that a 32 year old man had been arrested in connection with the incident. By Wednesday, selected media were confirming that it had been black male who was arrested, but that he had been released on bail. Today, all we know is that three other people aged 16, 17 and 26 have been arrested in connection with the incident.

At no time has any media outlet commented on exactly who was driving the vehicle that killed the three gentlemen, and, despite there being so many people present at the crime scene, there have been no reported eyewitness accounts. There's clearly a media blackout going on here. Please let the truth be told. The victims, their families and the wider community deserve nothing less.

It is good that somebody has noticed, what seems like a media blackout on the real truth.

One has to write, that if the police are still giving out information to the media, which is outside of the data protected act, then this is a breach of the data protection act regarding the data subject.

It has been noted that, the media has admitted to the police release of rioting youths pictures, which the certain media groups have printed in it's newspapers.

As the media is a private company, they are not legally supposed to receive any information from the police, without proper legal authorisation from the data subject, which is the arrested person or wanted person.

when people are wanted or arrested by the police, on the custody records of the person arrested, it referes to "suitable for press" and a box for a yes or no. If a person has not been arrested yet, but the police have released a suspects photo, it beacons that if they are allowed to release that information, to a private media group, even to a crimewatch programme on Television

I must let it be known, that if the police hand out information to the private media press regarding a criminal suspect, this can do the criminal case damage, and the law cannot prosecute the indivisual, as the police would have abused a process???? e.g breaching the data protection act to forward a criminal case.

If the media has been given information from the police, it would be prudent for the media not to use that information.

I have heard the father of one of the victims talking to the press appealing for people who were at the scene of the incident to come forward and give statements so that his late son can be proved innocent. What does this mean? Why are people who were there not giving statements? Why silence from the father who lost TWO SONS? The police say they are looking for "triple murderer" but simultaiously give statements that the case is "complicated". There is something very wrong with this picture. My own view is that a black man was attacked whilst in his car and attempted to escape a lynching. Time will tell. As someone wrote above one "revenge" lynching has already taken place. This is, in my view, what has been planned for black people after press started and continue to portray these riots as a criminal activity being perpetrated solely by black youth. Strange fruit ..again..

Yes Sherlock bang on

The mobile phone footage taken from accross the street doesn't bear out what your saying though as the car was driven towards the group at around 50mph according to the Police.

Get over the fact that this was not an "accident" and not an attempted lynching. Also the lynching that you describe to have taken place after the death of these three men can you please state where this has meant to have happened? Or is it another rumor like the rape of a black girl in Birmingham in 2005 by 12, sorry 13, I mean 14, no make that 19 men Asian men?

Looting

Anonymous's picture
Anonymous

Dont refer to this as being an accident. It clearly isn't and the Afro-Carribbean community should know better having being victims of racism themselves. What your doing now is exactly what you complain that the White community/Police did in Tottenham

Further, there is a lot of jealousy of the fact that Asians have established businesses in handsworth, Lozells, Winson Green etc. In 2005 a baseless rumor was started to justify rioting and looting of Asian stores. No girl existed and no DNA was found in the store where the alleged rape occurred. The Afro-Carribbean community said the victim was an illegal immigrant and afraid she would get deported. The Police responded and said no such thing would occur and myself as an Immigration caseworker can state that children are usually given discretionary leave to remain. Again it was not enough to coax this "victim" out.

It was only when Asians responded to the looting and provocation directed towards them and two Afro-Carribbeans were killed did the madness stop

Asians are usuaully the victims of Black crimes in these areas as highlighted by the spate of Asian women being robbed of their purses an jewellry by Black men which have increased in recent times. A 40-year old lady named Rashida Ahmed was attacked by twelve stick wielding Jamaicans in Saltley during the riots but I suppose you will call that an accident too.

Then we had those poor lads run over for protecting their shops and businesses by cowards hiding in a vehicle.

When will you guys understand that the Asian community have established businesses through hard work. We dont receive government grants or handouts and most of us came here from poor countries with very little. If anything you guys have a head start on us a you already spoke English before you came and had English names whereas our parents did not have these advantages. We're sick and tired of your whining about youth not having a focus - you constantly point the finger but are not prepared to take responsibility for your actions, broken families, mental health, drug addiction, criminality and the plethora of problems you have created. Be accountable and realise your community needs to deal with the serious issues it has created. There are only so many times that Asians are going to be patient with this and tolerant of the old ladies in our community being robbed and our shops being looted.

Look how strong the victims father was and how he called for calm and re-iterated that race wasn't an issue - are any of the Black community trying to reign in their kids and find out why they are out all night and where there money is coming from.

Enough's enough and your race card argument is tired and exhausted now because your community are as guilty of racism as the rest

I don't know much facts about

Anonymous's picture
Anonymous

I don't know much facts about this particular case but if black people are guilty of these horrendous crimes, I hope that they are severely punished for them.

What I take issue with is the number of inaccurate statements in your rant with regards to the comparative advantage that blacks have over Asians and also your social commentary on blacks.
#1 You don't need to speak good English to run businesses. You need capital. Historically the Asian people were always treated better than the blacks during colonial times. As a matter of fact, in several countries where the Asians were immigrants, they had the audacity to look down on indigenous blacks. Hence, their forebears were able to accumulate wealth because of the extra opportunities available to them.
#2 You may have built your businesses through hard work but you also have built them through racism. For instance, solely, hiring your own people and consuming only from your own community. But there is nothing wrong with that, as the true definition of racism; is defined as, races competing for the available resources to ultimately gain political and economic power. As most people do, you confused the word racism with prejudice and bigotry which it is not.
#3 The facts are, you love us as consumers but you don't respect us. You don't want us to even touch a hair on the head of your daughters, regardless of whether we are successful hard working people or not. You look down on us.
#4 Of course, blacks have problems within the community but so do Asian people. You can't deny that.

You should of stayed on topic and expressed your grieve about these men losing their lives. Instead you tried to re-write history and make weak arguments about subjects you clearly know nothing about.

You are right, it was not an accident. These families are suffering the death of their loved ones. They have shown dignity, class and humility, I could go on. What these families do not need from you or anyone are vemonous, hate filled responses. Does it matter what colour, creed or race of the people concerned. Would those men be less dead if the killers were white, Chinese etc. You need to wise up, grow up and show sympathy to the families who are grieving.

In no way is their behaviour justified, but I hope the families of the men killed, and the community from which they came don't view the incident from a racial standpoint. That will only make matters worse, and will make them almost as bad as those that killed them.

I wonder to what extent just the physical reality of urban living may partly be at root of all this violence and nihilism? So many inner city born and bred kids can never truly run off young energy naturally without being in a public space under the gaze of cctv. Even running off energy in organized sport has been badly restricted by the selling off of playing fields. Some parts of our big cities have nearly no green space. It's not natural to grow up surrounded by concrete and thousands of people. ..Just wondering how much of a factor..

I have just seen a news clip on the Tonight programme on ITV from the riots in Manchester where the majority of rioters were white in the clip shown. Please, please, please, will The Voice be courageous enough to show the white rioters pictures on the front page to balance the reporting of the riots by the wider press. Whilst we all condemn the activities of those involved, we must not lose sight of the fact that some sectors will report the riots in such a way as suits their own agendas. It must be stressed somewhere in the media that this was not just black youths, despite the media's portrayal of events so far which has concentrated on and emphasised only the criminal activities of black youths.

I am certain that such a front page will have people buying the newspaper in droves and will re-balance the entire debate.

Also it goes to show that it does not matter what cultural/religious background you come from you can still contribute to the society that we all have to live in.
THE FERAL RATS WHO HAVE BEEN RULING OUR STREETS FOR THE LAST FEW NIGHTS NEED TO BE DEALT WITH IN THE SAME WAY AS WE WOULD WITH ANY KIND OF TOXIC BREAKOUT---DESTROY IT> IT IS NOT NORMAL+ DISENFRANCHISEMENT DIDN"T START THIS, IT IS MORONS WHO SHOULD KNOW BETTER.

Also it goes to show that all the hatemongers who say that we as a society should be scared of religious terrorists maybe should be more inclined to take a page from their books because it seems to me that these people are the communities who are on the streets protecting their communities instead of burning them!!!!
