SUPPORT: Shania Dempsey-James
THE PARENTS of a 12-year-old cancer sufferer are asking the public to support their efforts to raise £15k to fund her potentially life-saving trip to America.
Shania Dempsey-James was diagnosed with spindle cell in July 2011 and is currently being treated at UCL Hospital in London. However, she has to travel to the US to have Photon Laser Therapy, a treatment that is not available in the UK.
To date £3,400 has been raised by her family and friends. The youngsters former primary school, Wormley Church of England, has also been heavily involved in the fundraising drive. To date they have organised cake sales, book sales and a school disco.
"We are totally blown away by the support of the local community, friends and strangers. I was told recently by a close friend that it takes a community to raise a child and in the last few weeks it’s been proven," Shania's mother, Sharon Dempsey said.
She added: "I am overwhelmed by the support."
The 12-year-old's family are also arranging a masquerade ball, which will take place in Hertfordshire on February 25, 2012, in the hope of raising more money. Tickets to the event are already sold out.
Luke Daniel, a British competing athlete, will take part in a sponsored run from Cheshunt to Big Ben on February 26. Donations can be made through Just Giving.
