16-year-old footballer dies after collapsing during match

R.I.P: Izzy Dezu

A PROMISING young footballer has collapsed and died while playing for Shelbourne Football Club in the Dublin and District Schoolboys League.

Izzy Dezu, who was 16, suddenly became ill during the match at the Athletic Union League Complex on Tuesday night (Dec 12).

He was given first aid and was taken to hospital where his death was confirmed.

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) said he was" widely regarded as one of the most promising players at this age level in the country".

"Everyone involved in Irish football is deeply saddened by the loss of Izzy Dezu at such a young age, particularly in these tragic circumstances," said FAI's chief executive, John Delaney.

In a statement, Shelbourne FC said: "We are heartbroken to have to confirm the news that our Academy U16 player, Izzy Dezu, collapsed and died during a match last night.

The thoughts of everyone at Shelbourne FC are with his family and friends who have been devastated by his tragic loss.

May he rest in peace."

St Kevin's Boys and Longford Town FC also shared their condolences to the late player.

"We at St Kevin’s Boys Fc would like to pass on our Condolences to the family,Friends and everybody at Shelbourne Football Club after their young academy player Izzy Dezu collapsed and died in a game last night.Very Sad news Rest In Peace young man."
