AN 89-YEAR-OLD woman has graduated with an associate degree in interdisciplinary studies.

Ella Washington said she does not want to just stop there and has plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in history at Liberty University, Virginia.

She said: "To me, history is a great subject. Everybody should know their history and learn more about it. A lot of people don't know much about history. There's nothing wrong with learning more."

It took her six years to complete the degree after enrolling on to Liberty’s online programme in 2012.

Speaking about her achievement, Washington said: “Education will help you make the best life for yourselves and those who come after you.”

With proud family members by her side, her daughter Ellen Mitchell said that her mother had always been passionate about learning.

In a statement, Mitchell said: "Her desire for learning and for pursuing an education became a family tradition.

“She taught all of her children how to read, write, and do math prior to their beginning school, just as her grandmother taught her and her siblings."

Mitchell told CBS News: "My mother is a remarkable woman. I learned how to be strong because of her example. Now, she has set the bar for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”
