Actor from The Wire dies in his sleep

AN EXCEPTIONAL ACTOR: Robert F. Chew

ONE OF the cast of hit US drama The Wire passed away on January 17 from heart failure at the age of 52.

Robert F. Chew, who portrayed drug lord Proposition Joe for all five seasons of the critically acclaimed show, died in his sleep at his home in north Baltimore.

Speaking to The Baltimore Sun, creator and head writer of The Wire - David Simon - said of Chew: “Robert was not only an exceptional actor, he was an essential part of the film and theater community in Baltimore.

“He could have gone to New York or Los Angeles and commanded a lot more work, but he loved the city as his home and chose to remain here working. He understood so much about his craft that it was no surprise at all that we would go to him to coach our young actors in season four.”

Simon added: “He was the conduit through which they internalised their remarkable performances.”
