UNDERGROUND RAILROAD: Actress Viola Davis (right) will play Harriet Tubman in a new film biopic

THE HELP actress Viola Davis will be given the chance to walk in Harriet Tubman's shoes as she prepares for her role in a forthcoming HBO film about the abolitionist hero.

HBO announced that the project is based on the biography, Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman, by historian Kate Clifford Larson.

Tubman was born into slavery in Maryland, escaped in 1849 and led countless slaves from the South to freedom along the Underground Railroad. She later served as a cook and a nurse and eventually a spy for the Union Army during the Civil War.
