SUPPORTER: Wright speaking at the AFCARTheGame press conference

FORMER ARSENAL star Ian Wright has thrown his support behind AFCARThe Game which takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 27.

Some of the biggest names in football will converge on Brentford’s Griffin Road ground when a Friends of the Caribbean XI take on their African counterparts.

Two star-studded squads of football legends and high-profile celebrities from the Caribbean, Africa and England will compete in what will be a fiercely contested clash.

At the recent press conference at the Hilton Kensington in London to announce details of the big match, Wright said: “It is good to see the black community coming together and I hope that this becomes an annual fixture taking place around the UK.

“I am also pleased to see so many footballers, both past and present in attendance.”

Among those who gathered at the Hilton were the Stein brothers (Mark, Edwin & Brian), Queens Park Rangers’ DJ Campbell, Kevin Lisbie (Leyton Orient), Richard Langley (former QPR), Jamal Campbell-Ryce (Notts County), Barry Hayles (former Fulham), Vincent Pericard (former Portsmout) and Ade Akinbiyi (former Crystal Palace).

The Jason Roberts Foundation (JRF) and the Sodje Sports Foundation (SSF) are the two organisations behind the event which will temporarily divide the community as they support their team.

Otis Roberts, chief executive of the JRF, told the Voice of Sport: “There is a sense of anticipation about what is going to be a great event. I am looking forward to celebrating football, families, cultures and communities.”

Among the players and football celebrities invited to take part are Patrick Vieira, Andy Cole, Michael Turner, Emile Heskey, Paul Merson, Nwankwo Kanu, Ashley Banjo (Diversity), Chucky Venn (Eastenders), Peter Odemwingie, Dereck Chisora and Eddie Kadi, with other names to be confirmed.
