African queens lead the way in 1500m

WINNER: Genzebe Dibaba

THREE AFRICAN women led the way in the opening heat of the 1500m at the World Athletics Championships today (August 5).

Genzebe Dibaba (Ethiopia), Caster Semenya (South Africa) and Winny Chebet (Kenya) made it a 1-2-3 in the first round of the middle distance discipline. Ethiopian Dibaba won in a time of 4:02:67.

The race was led for most of the way by home favourite Jessica Judd but she was overtaken by Africa's finest. Judd was to eventually come home with a personal best time of 4:03:72 and qualify for the final much to the delight of most in the arena.

Monday evening's final should be a cracker. Semenya is the reigning Olympic 800m gold medallist after success in Rio last summer while Dibaba, 26, is the current world record holder for the 1500 m (both indoor and outdoor).
