SPRINT SENSATION: Jodie Williams won the 100m and 200m at the European Junior Championships

DOUBLE EUROPEAN 100m and 200m champion Jodie Williams has decided to put her education before athletics.

Sprint sensation Williams, who won the 200metres at the European Junior Championships in Tallinn on Saturday to add to the 100m title she took on Friday, will put school before competing at the world senior championships in South Korea next month.

Williams, the world junior 100m title holder, at just 17 is the best senior 200m runner in the country and looks ready to make further progress at next year’s London Olympics, which will take place shortly after she finishes her A-levels.

After completing her double in Talinn the precocious talent admitted: “I’m still really pleased we made that decision [not to compete in the World Championships] as I’m not even sure I would have made the final in Daegu," said Williams. "But this win has definitely given me confidence for London," Williams added.

Parents Richard and Christine Williams have put as much onus on Jodie's three A-levels, which include maths and psychology, as she prepares to start at university a month after the 2012 Olympics.

That template for combining an academic career – Williams plans to read psychology – with Olympic ambition has already been set by the American Allyson Felix, who could win 200m gold in London.
