PLACES TO VISIT

Kaieteur National Park

Home to the Kaieteur Falls, this park is a nationally-protected site with a diverse range of plant and animal life to keep budding biologists on their toes. The Kaieteur Falls is a stunning sight, surrounded by lush, green forest. These falls are perfect for getting rid of worries and reconnecting to your spirit.

Mount Roraima

With its breathtaking sheer-cliff top, Mount Roraima is the triple border point of Guyana, Brazil and Venezuela. The table-top mountains of this range are considered some of the Earth’s oldest geological features, and are not to be missed by geology enthusiasts and avid climbers.

Orinduik Falls

Tranquillity describes this waterfall. It cascades over solid, semi-precious jasper rocks to the beautiful relaxing river beneath. The rolling green hills surrounding this area add to the serene view of one of Guyana’s most beautiful waterfalls. Any visitor is sure to be left breathless by the awe-inspiring power of the falls.

Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology (Georgetown)

This museum preserves many Amerindian artefacts and is a favourite of Guyanese returnees of Amerindian heritage. The museum is small so you will definitely see everything without spending hours there. Very enlightening.

St Georges Cathedral (Georgetown)

This 43-meter high Gothic cathedral was built in 1842 and is one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world. The building celebrates the history of the Anglican Church in Guyana. A must for any visitor who likes wooden architecture.

FOOD TO TRY

Guyanese food absorbs influences from various cultures, including Chinese, Arabian, African, European, Amerindian and East Indian.

Pepperpot

Pepperpot is the national dish of Guyana, taken from Amerindian heritage. It is a variety of stewed meats with added cinnamon, cloves, hot peppers, garlic, thyme, ginger and Casreep, taken from the cassava root.

Metagee

A Guyanese Creole stew that that consists of yam, plantain, breadfruit, cassava, salted meats or fish, cooked in thick, creamy coconut milk with tomatoes, onions, garlic, hot peppers and palm oil.

Garlic Pork

Garlic Pork is served with the traditional home made bread. The recipe includes boneless, fatty pork meat (rind on), crushed garlic, dried thyme, chili peppers, white vinegar and sugar and the pork is marinated for two days, then baked or fried.

Cookup rice

Cookup rice is a one-pot rice dish that consists of rice, a variety of meats, split peas or black eyed peas and fresh herbs, that is cooked together with coconut milk. This dish was originally considered a peasant dish and traditionally created and made to be eaten at the end of the week when rations would have been depleted. So the ends and bits of meat left over were used and cooked down with rice.
