Alli provides a punch for club and country

EURO STAR: The midfield protégé in action for England

ENGLAND’S MOST exciting player marked the new year in terrific fashion with a stunning volley against Everton, as the visiting enclosure struggled to contain their excitement; a star is emerging in front of our very eyes.

Dele Alli produced an encouraging performance and was one of the best players on the pitch during Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with the Toffees.

The 19-year-old’s wonder goal, and form for most of the season, makes the teenager a racing certainty to be on the plane that departs for Paris and this summer’s European Championships.

Most pertinently, this is Alli’s first season in the top-flight with Spurs and he is already one of the first names on the team-sheet.

It has been a remarkable rise for the England international whose brilliant form this term has earned him a new contract extension at White Hart Lane.

When the midfielder completed his £5 million move from MK Dons to Spurs he was loaned back to the then League One side as part of his continued development, but his transition to life in the Premier League has shocked many, including his former manager.

EXCITING: Alli

“I’ve been slightly surprised at the enormity of his impact on the Premier League and the national side, but he was always going to do well straight way,” says Karl Robinson.

“He has looked after himself unbelievably well and good people deserve success. Dele can be as good as he wants tobe.”

Alli’s international career has developed at an equally rapid rate. He was fast-tracked into the England senior team by a circumspect Roy Hodgson after an abbreviated under-21 career and has not looked back.

He is part of a strong English contingent at Spurs, proving to be a lovely conundrum for manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Tottenham’s focus on giving young English players a chance is benefiting England and Hodgson, who has expressed his gratitude to the Argentine.

It must serve as a bitter blow to Liverpool and Manchester United that Spurs were able to secure the signature of Alli having initially been in for the midfielder.

Premier League scouts turned up in their numbers to watch the youngster play at stadiummk, but you have to wonder whether their sat-navs had led them to the right destination with many believing he was not yet talented enough to be prized away from the Dons.

But Tottenham took a chance on Alli and so far they have reaped the rewards with the midfielder now one of the hottest commodities in English football.

So far Pochettino’s nurturing of Alli has been seamless and the young English star has praised his manager for being fearless in giving youth a chance.

“He’s a great manager and he puts a lot of trust in young English players,” Alli said. “It’s a great thing for English football. It’s a great platform for the club and it shows what we’re about.”
