BEST known for his role as John Coffey in Stephen King film The Green Mile, he was affectionately known as a gentle giant. Duncan died of a heart attack at the age of 54-years-old.

HE made significant strides for West Indian literature in his 60 year career. Born and educated in Guyana, Carew was a novelist, poet, educator and pioneer on the field of Pan-African studies. He also helped redefine the Caribbean’s colonial history, before he passed at the age of 92.

Duke Vin – died November 3

DEEJAY and sounds system pioneer Duke Vin started his career in the early 1950’s, he was a regular player at the Notting Hill Carnival, where is deejayed for 37 years. He died of heart failure at the age of 84.

Sherman Hemsley – died July 24

BEST known for playing George Jefferson in the hit sitcom The Jeffersons, Hemsley died at the age of 74, after a fight with Lung cancer.

Rosa Guy – died June 3

DEFINING a generation with her literature, the Trinidadian-born American writer tackled the issues of race, sex, class, poverty and violence with her groundbreaking work. Shed died of cancer at the age of 89-years-old.

Andy Hamilton – died June 3

SAXOPHONIST and pioneering jazz composer died in his sleep at the age of 94. The grand elder statesman of the Birmingham jazz scene, he was awarded an MBE in 2008 for his services to music.

Don Cornelius – died February 1

THE man that brought us Soul Train, the iconic show that broke down racial barriers and featured almost every soul artist in the last 30 years died tragically this year, after committing suicide. He was 75.
