Antigua honeymoon killers sentenced to life

CHARGED: Keniel Martin (right) and Avie Howell (left) leave the High Court of Antigua

THE KILLERS of a British honeymoon couple were sentenced to life in prison last week (Dec 16).

Kaniel Martin, 23, and Avie Howell, 20, were found guilty of the murders of Ben and Catherine Mullany, both 31, during a dawn raid at Antigua's five-star Cocos Hotel in 2008.

The Mullanys, who had only been married for only two weeks, were shot in the back of the head.

Martin and Howell were found guilty in July following a two-month trial. They were also found to have committed another murder two weeks after the incident, this time targeting 43-year-old Woneta Anderson.

Detective Superintendent Keith Niven, who led the Met's investigation team, said: "Howell and Martin took the lives of an innocent defenseless couple who were just beginning married life together. Ben and Catherine were hard-working, thoroughly decent people, celebrating their marriage with a luxury honeymoon on a Caribbean island."

He continued: "The dignity and courage of Ben and Catherine's families throughout the last three years has been an inspiration to us all."
