Archbishop to launch Jamaica independence celebrations

BRITAIN’S LEADING black Anglican cleric, Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu, will be in Jamaica next year to launch events celebrating the island’s 50th anniversary of independence from Britain.

The Archbishop, along with his wife Margaret, will be in Jamaica during January. He is scheduled to lead an ecumenical service in Montego Bay and a special service at the Cathedral in Spanish Town.

In addition, the Archbishop will meet leading church ministers.

Regional director of the Jamaica Tourist Board, Elizabeth Fox said: “2012 marks the start of Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of independence. Therefore, when planning the official events that will take place throughout the year, the Jamaica Tourist Board considered there no better way of launching these celebrations by way of a visit from the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu."

“Jamaicans are deeply religious people and has more churches per square mile than any other country in the world. We hope, therefore, that religious groups and Jamaican Diaspora in the UK will see this as an opportunity to go back and visit during the Archbishop’s visit.”

It will be Dr John Sentamu’s second visit to the island. He said of his forthcoming trip: “I am looking forward to visiting Jamaica as it celebrates 50 years of independence, and sharing in the celebrations.”
