Ava DuVernay gets her own Barbie

IMMORTALISED: Ava DuVernay's 'Sheroe' doll

SELMA DIRECTOR Ava DuVernay has been honoured with her very own Barbie.

DuVernay’s ‘Sheroe’ doll was unveiled at Variety’s ‘Power of Women’ luncheon on Friday (April 24).

The director features among Mattel’s Sheroes of 2015, along with actors Emmy Rossum and Kristin Chenoweth and singer Trisha Yearwood, who each represent a set of “female heroes who inspire girls by breaking boundaries and expanding possibilities for women everywhere”.

“Barbie has always represented that girls have choices, and this spring we are proud to honor six Sheroes who through their trade and philanthropic efforts are an inspiration to girls,” said Evelyn Mazzocco, general manager of Mattel, creators of Barbie, said in a statement.

HONOURED: Director Ava DuVernay

“Started by a female entrepreneur and mother, this brand has a responsibility to continue to honour and encourage powerful female role models who are leaving a legacy for the next generation of glass ceiling breakers.”

DuVernay wrote on Twitter: “I always played w/ my sisters Jina + Tera. For hours making stories + scenarios. So this is special. Thanks @Barbie”.

Her doll comes complete with her trademark dreadlocks and sits in a director’s chair.

The dolls will be auctioned off with the proceeds going towards a charity of the woman’s choice.
