Award-winning businesswoman appointed to BBC Trust

TRUST-WORTHY: Media mogul Sonita Alleyne has been appointed to the BBC Trust

AWARD-WINNING journalist and businesswoman Sonita Alleyne has been appointed to the BBC's governing body.

Alleyne will start the four-year appointment to the BBC Trust, responsible for representing the interests of licence fee payers and holding executives to account, on November 1.

Jeremy Hunt, the secretary of state for culture, Olympics, media and sport, said: “I am pleased Sonita Alleyne is joining the BBC Trust. With her long and distinguished history of involvement with the radio and the broadcasting sector she will make a most valuable contribution."

Alleyne set up Somethin’ Else – a media company she founded after she was made redundant in 1991. The company expanded rapidly, and stated making content for the BBC and commercial radio stations.

In 2000, Alleyne received the Award of Excellence from the European Federation of Black Women Business Owners and, two years later, won the Carlton Multicultural Achievement Award for TV and Radio.

Somethin' Else eventually expanded to become the biggest syndicator of radio programmes in the UK outside of the BBC, distributing shows to more than 200 radio stations in 65 countries.

She stepped down as CEO in 2009 and became a non-executive director.

Alleyne holds a number of governance roles including the London Legacy Development Corporation, the British Board of Film Classification, regional newspaper group Archant and The University of the Arts London.

She served as a non-executive board member for the department for culture, media and sport during London's bid for the 2012 Games and has also chaired Creative Skillset’s Radio Sector Skills Council.

She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and the Radio Academy, and was awarded an OBE for services to broadcasting in 2004.
