Axe wielding rioter jailed for five years

JAILED: Karl Smith was caught on CCTV raiding several shops in Brixton

A RIOTER seen carrying an axe involved in burglary during last year's summer disorder, has been jailed for five years.

Karl Smith, 26, confessed to committing a string of burglaries, being involved in violent disorder and criminal damage offences during the height of the London riots, and was handed down his term at the Inner London Crown Court on Tuesday.

Smith, who is captured on CCTV holding the weapon, was involved in the raids of high street chains Footlocker, McDonalds and betting shop, William Hill in Brixton, south London, on August 7 last year.

Before the incidents occured Smith was believed to have stolen the axe from a fire engine parked on Coldharbour Lane, also in Brixton.

Acting Detective Inspector Dale Luke from Lambeth borough said: "Karl Smith was identified during extensive CCTV enquiries conducted by a committed CCTV police enquiry team."

"My officers continue to work very hard in pursuing individuals who decided to participate in the disorder within the Borough of Lambeth last August," he added.
