PROBLEMS: Azealia Banks
US RAPPER Azealia Banks' homophobic tweet directed celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, has sparked a response from campaigners the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation [GLAAD].
The Harlem native caused a stir when she referred to the famous showbiz journalist as a ‘fa***t’ during a spat over the social network last weekend. Hilton angered the 212 hit-maker when he asked her about a recent argument with fellow female rapper Angel Haze.
Azealia wrote: "lol what a messy f----t you are [sic].”
In a separate post she added: "A f----t is not a homosexual male. A f----t is any male who acts like a female. There's a BIG difference [sic]."
After seeing the shock tweets anti-homophobia campaigners GLAAD sent a message to the 21-year-old star asking for answers.
"@AZEALIABANKS Are you open to hearing from young #LGBT people & fans who have been hurt by slurs & comments like yours?" they tweeted.
Matt Kane, Associate Director of Entertainment Media at GLAAD, reportedly said in an official press release: "'F----t' is an ugly, archaic word that was used to stigmatize a population of people who suffer high rates of violence both here in the U.S. and abroad.
“As far as we’ve come in this society, seeing it used by an artist many young people may look up to is painful, but even more so for those young fans, many of whom GLAAD has heard from.”
