Baggies begin contract talks with Saido Berahino

IN FORM: Berahino (PA)

ENGLAND FORWARD Saido Berahino is set to be rewarded with a generous new contract at West Brom following his scintillating goalscoring start to the season.

The 21-year-old, who is the Premier League’s highest scoring Englishman, is likely to have his current deal extended beyond 2017.

It could be seen as an attempt by the Baggies to ward off potential interest from some of the other clubs with larger budgets who may decide Berahino is a target worth prising away from the Hawthorns.

Having already netted eight times during this campaign, Berahino was confirmed to be in talks with West Brom, following a statement on the club’s website from chairman Jeremy Pearce.

He said: “We have opened preliminary talks with Saido's representatives.

“This reflects proudly on our club and the efforts of all the staff who have played such a key role in Saido's progress since he arrived here as an 11-year-old.

“However, it seems to have also generated unwarranted and excitable speculation about his future - which I wish to stress remains very firmly aligned to this football club.”

Last week, England boss Roy Hodgson called up Berahino to the senior squad and the frontman is expected to make his full international debut against either Slovenia or Scotland later this month.
