Ballet Black and Freed create pointe shoes for black dancers

INCLUSIVE: The new Freed and Ballet Black pointe shoe colours will join the manufacturer's core collection

LONDON-BASED BALLET company Ballet Black and dance apparel manufacturers Freed of London have teamed up to create the first skin tone pointe shoes handmade in the UK for black, Asian and mixed race dancers.

The new release, which features two new colours – Ballet Bronze and Ballet Brown – will be added to Freed of London’s core collection.

Cassa Pancho, the founder and artistic director of Ballet Black, said: "I am beyond delighted that Freed have launched these two new colours. Although it may seem like a very small change to the outside world, I believe this is an historic moment in British ballet history and another step forward for culturally diverse dancers across the globe who wear the iconic Freed brand of shoe.

“I would like to thank Freed for using their platform to help instigate change, and Cira Robinson, senior artist at Ballet Black, for her unending dedication to making this possible.”

In a statement, Freed of London said: “The Freed of London ethos has always been to develop shoes to meet the needs of each generation of dancer and these new colours continue to reflect this.”

The historic collection has been welcomed by dancers and representation campaigners.

In addition to the pointe shoes, a complete range including soft toe satin shoes, tights and handmade keychains in the new shades will be available soon.

Krystal Karmody, Freed of London marketing manager, said the plan is to “offer all of the range to all of the girls”.

Founded in 2001, Ballet Black is a professional ballet company for international dancers of black and Asian descent.

Freed of London has been making ballet shoes since 1929. Its pointe shoes are worn by both dance students and international ballerinas performing at leading opera houses across the world.
