PRESIDENT BARACK Obama has been re-elected to a second term in office and defeated Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
America's first black president has secured the 270 votes in the electoral college needed to win the race by the narrowest of margins.
It comes while citizens still have concerns about the way he has responded to the economy.
The president won Democratic strongholds and a number of swing states. His victory in the state of Ohio cemented his victory.
Romney claimed North Carolina and Indiana, two states Obama won in 2008 and also claimed staunchly Republican states but he was unable to match the current President.
