Barbados prepares for human chain link

BARBADIANS WILL be looking to execute a human chain link around the island to celebrate 50 years of independence.

Individuals, companies and other groups and organisations are registering for the One People One Barbados Human Chain on Monday, November 28.

One of the companies already registered is COT Holdings Limited. Nigel Worme, the Managing Director, said, “This is an exceptional, national initiative. We at COT have registered our staff to be links in the Human Chain in the Oistins area. Each team member has the freedom to choose whether they wish to be involved as part of COT or otherwise. Employees will all be paid regardless of whether or not they participate. Our operations are scheduled to commence at the conclusion of the event”.

The Ministry of the Civil Service has given approval for public officers to participate in the Human Chain and report for work at twelve noon.

The Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) will also be facilitating registration for its members at its Lower Collymore Rock, St. Michael office. They can be reached at (246) 228-7554.

All nursery, primary, secondary and some private and other educational institutions have already been allocated to points along the 92 kilometres chain.

When Sean Alleyne, General Manager of the Crane Resort, heard that there was to be a human chain, his face immediately lit up, and he said, “This is so wonderful! The only thing in my life that I can remember between birth and age four is participating in the 1979 Chain Link.

"I remember exactly where I was standing… and the Ping Pong chocolates and the ruler. This one is not missing me and I will seek to influence as many people as I can to get involved. I’m even willing to be a spokesperson”.
