Barnes signs deal with major sports channel

NEW ROLE: Barnes

FORMER ENGLAND international footballer John Barnes will join sports broadcasters ESPN as an analyst for their Premier League and FA Cup coverage in a multi-year deal.

In a storied career that spanned 20 years, Barnes played nearly 600 matches, including 79 appearances for England, and took home two First Division titles and two FA Cup winners’ medals with Liverpool and scored 177 goals.

Born in Jamaica, Barnes – who made his professional debut for Watford in 1981 - also managed Celtic, Jamaica and Tranmere Rovers. The 47-year-old has previously presented football on Channel 5.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed contributing to ESPN’s football coverage periodically, and as a fan of the game have enjoyed watching what they put on air and the innovative approach that have brought to coverage,” said Barnes.

“Having worked with Ray [Stubbs] and the team as a part of ESPN’s FA Cup presentation team last season, I am excited by what we can do to bring something distinctive to football fans.”

"During his playing career, Barnes had successful periods at Watford and Liverpool in the 1980s and 1990s, winning the First Division twice, the FA Cup twice, and playing for England 79 times (a former record for a black player). After a period at Newcastle United, he ended his playing career at Charlton Athletic in 1999."
