The "black-focused" dating app making its way to you

A NEW dating app targeted at eligible black singles, regardless of nationality or ethnicity all over the world, has launched.

AfriDate was backed by Happii, a startup studio that partners with aspiring founders to oversee the design, development, and management of new app businesses. AfriDate is the fifth app launched by Amanda Spann and Christopher Johnson, who both run Happii.

According to a statement, AfriDate is founded by a silent founder, who is “a 33-year old Nigerian entrepreneur, attorney, and angel investor decided to pursue the project with Happii after observing that mainstream dating apps often fail to account for cultural preferences and rarely yield positive experiences for black users.”

“My goal is to develop a transformative platform, where men and women from all over the African Diaspora can make cultural connections regardless of distance,” says the Founder. “And in an era where time is such a precious commodity, it shouldn’t take 300 swipes to find a face you like.”

The app will be available to all African nations, the Caribbean, and countries with large diaspora populations but availability will first be in Washington, D.C. and Chicago, with waitlists employed in all other geographical areas for a diverse and dynamic breadth of daters for all interested bachelors and bachelorettes.

“Though we share the common experience of being members of the black race, people of African descent are not monolithic. We are the most genetically diverse people in the world and we, too, deserve a dating platform that thoughtfully considers our unique preferences, customs, and interests,” says Co-Founder Amanda Spann. “We hope that AfriDate will be a useful resource in connecting Diaspora communities and a conduit for black love around the world.”

The app works similarly to Tinder and Bumble – but specifically for black people. There is also a premium version of the app with added features for a $4.99 fee.

AfriDate is currently available on Android via the Google Play Store and iOS via the Apple App Store.
