FINE FORM: Boyz II Men
THE RECENT London show from R’n’B supergroup Boyz II Men was like a trip down memory lane. Well, it was for those of us who fondly remember the hits that found the group fame. And judging by the crowd’s reaction, it appeared that we all fell into that category.
Shawn, Wanya and Nathan were in fine form as they performed to their 4,000+ crowd, delivering a host of their classic hits.
Displaying the harmonies that made them the biggest R’n’B group of the 1990s, the trio proved that they’ve still got it, 20 years after they made their debut.
Firm favourite Water Runs Dry was well-received by the excitable crowd, and during their powerful rendition of I’ll Make Love To You – which featured a wonderful acappaello segment – the boys threw roses into the crowd. Very fitting, with Valentine’s Day just around the corner!
Much-loved ballad On Bended Knee was powerfully delivered and lesser-known track Doin’ Just Fine was a welcome surprise to the set. Of course, the show wouldn’t have been complete without their best-known hit End Of The Road, which was seamlessly performed.
The fellas owned their stage, and wowed the audience, who clearly appreciated the era of ‘real’ singers and classic R’n’B songs.
In an era where voice-altering techniques are all too common in music, (death to auto-tune, I say), Boyz II Men serve as a reminder of true vocal ability.
While many still bemoan the departure of original group member Michael McCary, the Philadelphia-born trio proved they are by no means lacking without the famous baritone singer, holding their own and leaving their audience 100 per cent satisfied.
