Brazil announce final squad for World Cup

CHOSEN FEW: Not all could make the final Brazil squad (PA)

BRAZIL MANAGER Luiz Felipe Scolari has announced his final 23-man squad for the World Cup that kicks off next month.

Six Premier League players made the cut, with the majority coming from Chelsea.

Blues defender David Luiz, who has enjoyed spells in midfield this season, gets the nod, along with fellow club team-mates Oscar, Ramires and Willian.

The other two players from England’s top flight are Tottenham’s Paulinho and Manchester City’s Fernandinho.

The Championship also have a representative in the squad – Queens Park Rangers keeper Julio Cesar has been included and will likely be the Samba Boys first choice between the posts.

Nonetheless, there has been inevitable disappointment for some, such as Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho, who has been in hot form for Liverpool and was instrumental in their title charge that now appears to be over.

As host nation, Brazil are widely considered the favourites to win this year’s final.

A European team has never won a World Cup held in South America, and Spain were the first side from Europe to win the trophy outside of their home continent when they lifted the title in South Africa in 2010.

Brazil’s full squad:

Goalkeepers: Júlio César, Jefferson, Víctor

Defenders: Dani Alves, Maicon, Henrique, Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Dante, Marcelo, Maxwell

Midfielders: Ramires, Hernanes, Paulinho, Willian, Fernandinho, Luiz Gustavo, Oscar

Forwards: Neymar, Fred, Hulk, Jô, Bernard
