British student drowns in Brazil

TRAGEDY: Student Olakunle Teniola, 20, has drowned while on missionary work in Brazil

A 20-YEAR-OLD British student has drowned while on missionary work in South America.

The body of Olakunle Teniola was found on Friday after he went missing in the Amazon rainforest three days earlier.

He was last seen jumping into a lake with a friend in the Brazilian city of Manaus where he had generously opted to volunteer and help others.

His friend emerged from the water but Olakunle did not.

The devoted young Christian, or ‘Gospelz’ to his friends, was in his second year of a BA degree in youth work at Coventry University.

He was also a graduate of the Metropolitan Black Police Association’s youth leadership programme and was a well-loved and popular young man.

Friends have been expressing their grief on Twitter and sending messages of support to his family.

One user asked simply: “Why you?”

Another said: “My prayers are for the Teniolas to find peace and comfort. Their son went to be with God.”

The Foreign Office is providing consular support to his family.
