Brixton’s civil rights heroine to be honoured with new award

Young inspirational women to be nominated for an Olive Morris award.

ACTIVIST: Olive Morris

AN AWARDS scheme created in memory of 1970s black rights activist Olive Morris was launched last week.

Nominations are now open for the Olive Morris Memorial Awards, which will be given to three young women who are following in Morris’ footsteps. The winners will be announced in October.

Olive Morris was regarded as an inspirational community activist in 1970s Britain. She died at the tragically young age of 27.

Morris was a key member of the British Black Panthers, a founding member of the Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent (OWAAD) and the Brixton Black Women’s Group. She also played a key role in a range of political campaigns such as squatter rights protests in south London and supporting liberation movements in the Third World.

“She left behind a significant legacy,” said a spokesperson for award organisers, The Remembering Olive Collective (ROC). “In the spirit of Olive’s life and work, three awards of £500 each will be given to young women engaged in radical grassroots political activity.”

All nomination forms should be returned by email to olivemorrishq@gmail.com by September 21, 2011.

To be honest I had never heard of Olive Morris before reading this article, shame on me! Sounds like we need another Olive Morris to step up and give some constructive guidance to the young and old in all of communities.
