The Brixton Soup Kitchen gets a helping hand from MP

REGULAR VISITORS to popular charity Brixton Soup Kitchen (BSK) were met with surprise last Friday, when their food was dished up by local MP Chuka Umunna.

The local MP, who represents the London Borough of Lambeth, where the kitchen is based, turned-up to see firsthand how local businesses are helping the charity feed the homeless and those in need. BSK is renowned for providing free food, support and company for its users.

Umunna said:

“Brixton Soup Kitchen does fantastic work in our community and far beyond, stretching as far as Brighton!

"It was great to visit, help serve food and learn about the outreach work they do in getting people back to work and providing support to those in our community who need it most.

Local business in Brixton have been generous with their giving of leftover food, but the Soup Kitchen needs cash too.”

One local business in particular, LS1 Boiler Installation, have been described by the BSK as "invaluable in their help, particularly over the cold winter months as they installed an entire heating system including boiler and radiators free of charge."

Owner of LS1 Boiler Installation, Wayne Tomlinson was invited to meet Umunna and joined him also got involved in serving food and chatting to visitors, he said:

“I am a proud Brixtonian, having been born and brought up here, so I care passionately about our local community.

"The Brixton Soup Kitchen is such a fantastic project because it’s all about local people and businesses pulling together to provide practical help and support for Brixton’s homeless and beyond.

"LS1 were happy to donate the heating system, but we don’t want to leave it there so we’re happy to continue our support as official sponsors.”
