Cabinet reshuffle: Helen Grant appointed sports minister

NEW POSITION: Helen Grant has been made sports minister (PA)

MAIDSTONE AND The Weald MP Helen Grant has been chosen to replace Hugh Robertson as sports minister.

The Conservative politician, a former junior judo champion, leaves her post as under-secretary of State for Justice that she has held since September 2012.

The 52-year-old has a strong sporting background having competed at county level for Cumbria in cross-country, athletics, hockey and tennis – she was the Under 16s judo champion in the north of England and southern Scotland.

UK Sport chairman Rod Carr said: “We look forward to working closely with new Sport and Equalities Minister Helen Grant as we move towards the Sochi Winter Olympics and Rio 2016.”

Grant’s previous portfolio focused women’s and equality issues while working at the Ministry of Justice.

A qualified solicitor, she was elected to parliament in 2010, taking over Ann Widdecombe’s seat.
