HURRICANES SEE INSURANCE HIKE

A Caribbean insurance executive has warned regional hoteliers to expect a 10 to 40 per cent increase in insurance premiums following the 2017 hurricane season. CGM Gallagher Insurance Brokers’ Barbados and Eastern Caribbean managing director, Scott Stollmeyer, told a Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association webinar that reduced insurance rates of the last eight years will change during what he called “some challenging times” ahead.

of fellow senators have introduced a US$146bn relief package for Puerto Rico after the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

He said: “Many are struggling to get clean drinking water, and more than 100,000 people have left Puerto Rico alone. We are here to tell the people of Puerto Rico and tell the people of the Virgin Islands that they are not forgotten, they are not alone.”

NEW SPECIES FOUND IN GUYANA FOREST

A biodiversity assessment team has announced the finding of 30 new species in Guyana’s rainforest. Atlas Obscura said the joint team, including the World Wildlife Fund and the University of Guyana, reported six new kinds of fish, 15 aquatic beetles, five carnivorous insects and three plants which have not been observed in Guyana before.
