Celebrating Black History Month at Africa on the Square

THE MAYOR of London, Sadiq Khan, today encouraged Londoners and visitors to take part in this year’s Africa on the Square as part of his plans to mark Black History Month in the capital.

London’s annual celebration of African culture in Trafalgar Square, Africa on the Square will be the focal point of the city’s Black History Month celebrations. Londoners and visitors to the capital will have the opportunity to sample music and food, alongside a top line-up of entertainment and activities, all inspired by the traditions and cultures of the African continent.

This year’s event includes performances from Sudan, Cameroon, Madagascar, Ghana, Morocco and Mali.

The stage line-up, compered by Rosemary Laryea and Usifu Jalloh The Cowfoot Prince, reflects the diversity of London’s African communities. DJ Edu, whose BBC Radio 1Xtra show, Destination Africa, is the UK’s longest-running and most influential African music show, will DJ onstage throughout the day. Performers include multi-instrumentalist Nogabe Randriaharimalala, ‘Diva of the Sudanese desert’, singer Amira Kheir.

Cameroonian performer Muntu Valdo, the Gnawa Blues All Stars with Simo Lagnawi, Malian music group Djembe Thunder and Jay Johnson, winner of Africa on the Square Youth Talent Show 2016.

Joining the performers on the main stage in Trafalgar Square is an exclusive fashion show directed by Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) which will feature designers from the contemporary African UK fashion scene as well as new, up and coming designers.

Completing the schedule of events on the main stage is Brixton-based Afro fusion music band Yaaba Funk, fusing 21st century Hi-Life and hard-hitting Afro Funk with a bass-heavy UK vibe.
