The celebration of natural hair

NATURAL: Mahagony Boisseau has been rocking her beautiful afro for 15 years

"BEING NATURAL is no longer a journey, it's a lifestyle," says Mahogany Boisseau, a spokesperson for American magazine, Naptural Roots.

Boisseau, who has boasted natural locks for 15 years, was in town to attend Naturally Fabulous, an event put on by UK blogger Angel Smith of Natural Lounge, on Saturday (Oct 8).

"You better know why you want to go natural, otherwise tomorrow, next week or next month, you will be back to the relaxers," Boisseau told the 300 attendees at the central London venue, now in its second year.

Smith, who started her popular blog after struggling to find any valuable information about natural hair when she decided to stop chemically processing hers, said that she hoped to create the biggest natural hair event in the county to cater for women in the same dilemma.

FOUNDER: Angel Smith is the woman behind the recent Natural Hair event

"It was so difficult to find information on natural hair in the UK when I first decided to go back to my natural roots," she told the crowd.

Aretha Franklin's aptly titled Natural Woman played softly in the background as attendees walked around the room at the Cape Bar and received advice from experts on how to best care for their hair.

POETIC: Hunii M. Gray, reciting from her poems, urged women to love and accept themselves the way they were created

Poet and naturally haired Hunii M. Gray recited three of her poems as an ode to the black woman's natural mane.

"I'm not my hair. My hair is me," one poem started.

Hair Transplant

Hair transplant surgery is fast becoming a popular choice of procedure for both men and women who have been affected by hair loss. Losing your hair, especially for men, might appear to be a minor problem but there are many people who find it difficult to accept. This leads to frustration, anxiety and depression. Some people find that they become isolated as a result and are unable to discuss their feelings about this with anyone for fear of ridicule. But losing your hair is no laughing matter. Some people are happy to wear a wig or even go bald but others find that having a full head of hair is part of their identity. Your hair is a statement of who you are; your status, age and position in society

Its so funny how these daughters of Zion can spend there time at events about hair and beauty, dont get me wrong as a Rasta i applaud these women on their insight that we are beautiful and can be well presented in our natural order blah blah, but i guarentee if the show was about black children development they would not be so enthusiastic, we need to show our next generation that to move forward is not to look back but to learn back our pride and fortitude.

I was once called old fashioned by a West African woman when I told her that I do not fancy all these false hair on some black women. I like natural hair on black women (short or long). Unfortunately, our socialisation has conditioned us to wrongly believe that straight long hair is better. I hope this will encourage more black women will go natural.

I suggest you buy a natural hair magazine or pop into a hair salon and see what your options are, their are quite a lot of natural hairsyles just open your eyes and look. The reason why our hair stands up or grows up is simple it ALIVE.

There is no comfusion dear natural hair just means that, no extentions, no dyes, no nothing, as for natural looking hairstyles is what you are getting confused about, you can add extentions, colour etc just as longs as it looks natural to your race.

Wish i lived close enough to attend, and I'd like to say, the girl with the gorgeous braids is called Leila-Jean, she has a youtube blog where she documented her natural transition which is really good, and is worth some research.
