THE WAY THEY WERE: Rihanna and Chris Brown at a pre-Grammy gala in 2009

CHRIS BROWN attended the birthday party of ex girlfriend, Rihanna, earlier this week, it has been reported.

The pair, who broke up in 2009 after Brown physically assaulted the Bajan singer, are said to have been spotted getting close at the bash on Monday night, despite Brown's best efforts to keep a low profile.

Chris' representative reportedly confirmed his attendance to gossip site, TMZ and said that confidentiality agreements had been distributed to workers at the event while guests were banned from taking and pictures or videos of the star.

The private birthday bash to celebrate the We Found Love star's 24th birthday was held at the Hearst Mansion in Beverly Hills. Stars including Katy Perry, Bruno Mars and Kelly Rowland were in attendance.

Earlier this year, Brown had to refute rumours he was back with RiRi.

A statement from his representative reportedly read: "He and Rihanna are just friends."

"He is with his girlfriend, Karrueche and is not cheating,” they added.
