Chris Hughton's Brighton on the up

SEAGULLS SOARING: Brighton players acknowledge their fans at London Stadium

BRIGHTON SECURED a precious away win after beating West Ham 3-0 at the London Stadium on October 20. Two goals from man of the match Glenn Murray and Jose Izquierdo sealed the win against the lacklustre and embattled Hammers.

This was Brighton’s first away victory in the top flight since November 1983, ending a run of 12 games without a win.

Brighton’s Shane Duffy was particularly brilliant in defence. Brighton also showed their potency in attack and passing ability with seven attempts on goal.

Poor passing, failed crosses and shots sailing over the crossbar heaped more pressure on West Ham manager Slaven Bilic, despite dominating possession.

The third Brighton goal prompted many United fans to leave the ground, with a chorus of boos ringing around the stadium. However, the final whistle provoked wild celebrations from the away fans.

Hughton’s Seagulls, who played brilliantly throughout the game, moved up to 10th with this win. Next for Brighton will be a South Coast derby against Southampto on October 29.

Delighted Hughton, the only black manager in the top flight, said:

“The first goal was important for a team like us. The challenges are always there away from home. We had reasonable periods of the game controlling the game. The performance of the two centre halves were outstanding today, leading from the front.

“The fact we scored first certainly helped us. As the away team, we have a team experiencing new stadiums every time from home. We have to adapt to where ever we play.

“We have been in every game and if there is any statement, we should not be frightened of the challenges we have. We have enough quality in the squad.”

Under fire Bilic speaking to Sky Sports said:

“It's very hard for me to say anything clever now. I take full responsibility for it. I don't want to hide.

"It is not a good situation and the board will do what they are going to do. It's their decision."
