Christian rapper JayEss shares drawing talent

HAVING FUN: JayEss and, inset, his impression of Joshua

WHILE EVERYONE knows MOBO-nominated rapper JayEss for his rapping skills, people are waking up to a different side of artistic talent – his ability to draw.

Using his Instagram page, @artisticjalil, JayEss has been posting pencil-drawn portraits of well-known faces such as artists Dizzee Rascal, Notorious BIG and British actress Michaela Coel. He recently completed a portrait of world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua and is making plans to present him with it.

JayEss originally started drawing at the age of five and continued up until his teenage years, but stopped to focus on music. It was while working in his day job as a teacher that his drawing talent came back to the fore. He explained:

“I was teaching an art class at work and I decided to draw a picture of Michael Jackson to see if I still had it, because I hadn't drawn for 16-plus years. The picture came out pretty good so I decided to continue drawing more. I then realised how much I loved drawing and missed it.”

Since he started sharing his drawing on social media, he’s been building a following and getting orders.

Now that this side of his artistic talents has been revealed, JayEss has new ambitions.

“I'd like to have an art gallery one day, but really I'm just having fun with the drawing because I haven't done it for years," he said.
