Church building collapses in Ilford

COLLAPSE: A church building in Ilford came down yesterday

A FIVE storey church building collapsed in Ilford, east London collapsed yesterday (Jan 31), it has been reported.

A London Fire Brigade [LFB] spokesman reportedly said six fire crews and three fire rescue units were called at the scene, after the metal framework of the structure gave way.

One person at the scene is believed to have been treated for shock, following the incident.

The LFB statement said: "The steel frame surrounding it collapsed and scaffolding from the construction site also fell into a nearby car park, damaging six cars. All 22 construction workers on the site escaped uninjured,"

It continued: "USAR crews used specially trained dogs to complete a systematic search of the area and were able to confirm that no-one else was involved in the incident, although one passer by was treated for shock by London Ambulance Service."

The building's steel frame of the new £6.1 million City Gates Christian Centre, is said to have come down a short time after the workers had finished the day's work.

A statement by Ashe Construction on the incidient reportedly read: "Following extensive searches of the building site and surrounding areas the emergency services have confirmed that no site workers or members of the public have been injured as a result of the partial collapse."

It continued: "We are extremely grateful to the emergency services, the local authority and other statutory bodies for their response to this incident."
