GRAND: The diamond
A CHURCH pastor who found one of the largest diamonds ever discovered, has decided to give it to his country.
Pastor Emmanuel Momoh found the 709-carat gem in the Kono region of Sierra Leone. It is worth an estimated £50 million.
Instead of selling the diamond and pocketing the money, Pastor Momoh has handed the diamond over to the government to support his country’s development.
Pastor Momoh was publicly thanked by Sierra Leone’s president, Dr Ernest Bai Koroma for not smuggling the diamond out the country.
Giving the reasons for his decision to hand the diamond back to the country, Pastor Momoh said: “I believe the government can do more, especially at a time when the country is undergoing some economic challenges.”
Pastor Momoh hopes that the money will be used to fund public transport and services such as electricity power supply.
The diamond will be auctioned off by the government.
