Church raises £1m for South Sudan

FUNDRAISERS: The Irving Bible Church

OVER £1M has been raised by a nondenominational church in Texas to assist a charity in South Sudan that provide water for the locals.

The Irving Bible Church (IBC) in Irving, Texas, is aiding the effort of Water is Basic (WIB), who are a charity that are aiming to dispense fresh water throughout the east African country.

The IBC raised the money through donations from schools, youth groups and sponsored runs.

Founder of the WIB and pastor at the IBC, Steve Roese, explained that the idea to help the people of South Sudan was created after he spoke to a number of Sudanese religious leaders.

Roese told The Christian Post:

"At the time people were pouring back into the South only to find a devastated infrastructure and no access to water."

“They were full of ideas in the areas of education, agriculture, trauma healing, health and sanitation, and church building but in the end they all agreed nothing mattered more than clean water."

He added: "The entire funding, $1,700,000 [roughly £1m] so far, has filtered through IBC and been sent on to South Sudan. This is a Sudanese run project."
