Community centre finding new ways to survive

UNDER THREAT: The West Indian Cultural Centre

A WEST Indian cultural centre is developing new projects in order to survive after Haringey Council in north London cut its funding.

Lorna Blackman said the dedicated community centre is organising a new production, Angry Black Women‚ to generate financial support to keep it open.

The play will be held on August 5 at the West Indian Culture Centre on Clarendon Road in north London.

Blackman told The Voice: “To help support the centre which is a flagship for the black community, I have initiated the production. Tickets are just six pounds and we will provide a free glass of wine and nibbles. One of the actors involved in the production is Peter Nelson who works at the BBC. We need all the support we can get.”

A spokesperson for the north London centre said: “We are struggling and we need the support of the community. The community is very fond of their centre, which unites everyone and provides people with an opportunity to do something constructive."

They added: “We do so many things for the community such as feed the elderly three days a week and many other things. It would be a shame to see our community centre close."
