Daley Thompson gets in the saddle for charity

OLYMPIAN DALEY Thompson CBE, is taking part in a historic fundraising cycle event to mark Barnardo’s 150th anniversary and help the UK’s most vulnerable children.

The up to 362-mile bike ride from Holyhead in Wales to Barkingside in east London, offers cyclists the unique opportunity to follow Thomas Barnardo’s route when he arrived from Ireland back in 1866.

On seeing the shocking poverty and destitution in Victorian London, the benevolent 21-year-old decided to stay and committed himself to helping vulnerable children.

Barnardo’s challenge ambassador, Daley Thompson will join cyclists on day three of the bike ride and cycle 49 miles between Telford and Worcester.

Thompson said: “I know first-hand how important it is for children to have someone to believe in them. Regardless of whether they’re shy, quiet, cheeky or test everyone’s patience, they are all children - young minds who are trying to find their way in the world. Barnardo’s helps children across the UK to believe in themselves and this is why I cannot wait to take part in the Big Barnardo’s Bike Ride and raise vital funds.”

Along the route the cyclists will be visiting Barnardo’s services and stores, seeing first-hand how the charity supports some of the most disadvantaged children and families in the UK.

Barnardo’s chief executive Javed Khan said: “Retracing Thomas Barnardo’s journey to London by bike will be great fun as well as a fitting memorial to our founder in our 150th year. All the money raised through this epic cycling challenge will support the important work we do helping children and families have a brighter future, now and always. So don’t miss out - sign up for the ride today.”

Places are still available on the Holyhead to Barkingside bike ride, the deadline for applicants is 31 August 2016. For more information please visit Barnardo’s website.
