WINNER: Dalton Harris (Screengrab: ITV/YouTube)

DALTON HARRIS has a lot to celebrate. As the 24-year-old vocalist won over the hearts of millions of viewers to be crowned the 2018 winner of The X-Factor, it was also revealed that ratings for the hit show have improved when compared to last year.

According to the overnight ratings show, an average of 5.3 million people tuned in to watch Dalton Harris beat Anthony Russell and Scarlett Lee on ITV on Sunday.

While ratings have dropped significantly over the years (17.7 million watched Matt Cardle win in 2010), it was an improvement compared to last year’s overnight figure of five million, when Rak-Su won.

In the wake of his historic win as the first black male to wear the X-Factor crown, Harris appeared on ITV’s Lorraine on Monday (Dec 3), to discuss his feelings and plans for the future.

"I think I'm still not able to feel anything, it's just crazy. I found my artistry with [Louis Tomlinson], we worked well together, and he's a really good friend."

Tomlinson was Harris’ mentor during the competition. Prior to appearing on X Factor, the Jamaica-born star won the island’s equivalent of The X Factor, which he won in 2010.

He then went onto release three albums, but decided to enter the UK competition “to reach a wider audience”, BBC reports.

"I needed to go to school, and I needed to be able to take care of myself, because I was a homeless kid, so entering that competition enabled me to take care of myself," he told Lorraine.

"So it was kind of a big help, and then I knew I wanted to be an artist and I knew I had to go to a big platform."
