Daniel Sturridge: Didier Drogba improved my mental strength

SOUND ADVICE: Drogba, left, and Sturridge

HE CANNOT stop scoring at the moment and Liverpool front man Daniel Sturridge has said Chelsea legend Didier Drogba helped him develop the “mental strength” to perform consistently on the pitch.

The 24-year-old bagged yet another goal over the weekend against West Bromwich Albion with a sublime chip that helped the Reds win 4-1 after Luis Suarez spanked in a hat-trick.

Sturridge claimed he met Drogba over the summer, and the former Chelsea forward’s advice hit home in a big way.

The Liverpool player told the Sunday Times: “I saw Didier in Miami this summer.

“He said the strongest thing an individual can have is the mental strength.

“He told me, 'It's not about the tactical, it's not about the technical, it's not about the physical. If you believe in yourself, that will set you apart.’”

Sturridge had trouble breaking into both Manchester City and Chelsea’s first teams, but his £12m January move from west London to Merseyside has yielded an incredible goals return.

He has already netted eight times in nine Premier League games this season, and Sturridge looks he will not stop scoring anytime soon.

The prolific goal poacher added that club captain Steven Gerrard has also had a positive effect on his game, saying: “Stevie has helped me a lot in terms of mindset.

“He's all about self belief; don't go out there with the mentality of trying to do something. Just let it happen.”
