AMPICABLE SPLIT: Dawn French and Lenny Henry pose for a picture at Buckingham Palace after Lenny was presented with a CBE in 1999
COMEDIAN AND actress Dawn French revealed during an interview with Radio 4 that her family has had to endure ‘lots of racism’.
French was married to fellow actor and comedian Lenny Henry for 25 years before they divorced in 2010.
The Vicar of Dibley star also said that their 21-year-old daughter Billie still gets racially abused.
Speaking about their marriage, the 55-year-old French said: “I think the reason why a lot of people invested in it was because it was a black man and a white woman and lots of racism came hurling at us and we tried not to be too bothered about that.
“But he lived and probably still lives, with a certain amount of that at all times, and I’ve got a mixed-race daughter, who also lives with a certain amount of it at all times, and it’s shocking.”
French also spoke about the divorce from Henry, which ended amicably, adding: “Obviously you don’t get divorced without a certain amount of sadness.
“We knew the marriage was untenable.
"It was a tribute to the way we were married, how we ended it.
“I thought ‘oh god, what do I do now? Do I have to do dating? How repulsive. I’ll have to buy new pants.’”
