Deadline set for Kell Brook world welterweight title fight

TITLE SHOT: Kell Brook (PA)

FIGHTER KELL Brook has been told by the IBF that he must get in the ring to challenge for the world welterweight before July 19.

His title fight remains on schedule and he will face the winner of the match between IBF champion Shawn Porter and Paulie Malignaggi, who clash next month for the welterweight belt.

Even if Porter ends up not fighting the New Yorker, his next defence bout must be against Brook, who remains unbeaten.

The Sheffield boxer’s promoter Eddie Hearn said: “The IBF wrote to me last week to confirm that Porter had asked for an exemption to fight Malignaggi on April 19, 12 days outside of the restricted period.

“We asked that, if the exemption be granted, then it should be accompanied by certain requirements, the most important of those being that both fighters agree in writing to face Kell within 90 days of the bout or by July 19.”

He added: “We received confirmation from the IBF [on Wednesday] that the exemption would only be granted under a number of conditions including the above. It is great news for Kell after a frustrating period, and he just has to take care of business on Saturday night, then I am sure Britain will have another world champion by July 19.”

Brook is in action over the weekend in a 10-round fight against Mexican Alvaro Robles.
