Defence secretary Michael Fallon resigns

RESIGNED: Sir Michael Fallon

DEFENCE SECRETARY Sir Michael Fallon has resigned following allegations about past behaviour.

Sir Michael said his behaviour may have "fallen short" of the standards expected by the UK military and said it was right that Parliament was now taking this issue seriously.

In his resignation letter, he said: "A number of allegations have surfaced about MPs in recent days, including some about my previous conduct.

"Many of these have been false but I accept that in the past I have fallen below the high standards that we require of the Armed Forces that I have the honour to represent."

The former defence secretary apologised earlier this week after an incident 15 years ago in which he made unwanted advances to the journalist Julia Hartley-Brewer went public.

Sir Michael repeatedly placed his hand on her knee, although Hartley-Brewer herself insisted that, “no one was remotely upset or distressed” by it.

Prime Minister Theresa May said she appreciated the "serious manner" in which Sir Michael had considered his role.

According to BBC, May also appreciated the "particular example you [Fallon] wish to set servicemen and women and others".
