ONWARDS AND UPWARDS: DeGale
AFTER SUCCESSFULLY defeating his opponent on December 8 at the Bonus Arena in Hull, European champion James DeGale is now eyeing an all-British showdown with world titleholder Carl Froch.
Super-middleweight DeGale completely outboxed Fulgenico Zuniga en route to a unanimous points victory over 12 rounds and is now targeting a match-up against Froch, who holds the IBF title.
Nicknamed ‘Chunky’, the 26-year-old DeGale - a 2008 Olympic gold medallist - told Sky Sports: “I'd love to fight Carl and for British boxing that would be a massive fight.
“If I can continue to progress and keep on winning, then it would make sense for us to fight.
"If everything goes right, I hope to fight for the WBC title next year, either as the mandatory against Andre Ward or for the vacant title if he decides to give it up.”
Degale, from Harlsden, north London, believes that a bout against 35-year-old Froch would be too enticing for the Nottingham native to turn down.
“I think Carl would like a big domestic world title fight before he retires,” said DeGale.
“He didn't get it against Joe Calzaghe despite years of trying, and hopefully he could get one against me.
“He's the sort of fighter who will fight anyone, he likes big fights, and if I can win a world title, that would make it a big fight."
