Divorce on the rise in the UK

ON THE RISE: Divorce

THE NUMBER of divorces in England and Wales rose by 4.9 percent last year, according to The Office for National Statistics [ONS].

In the report, released today (Dec 8), it was revealed that there were approximately 119,589 divorces documented in 2010, compared to 113,949 in 2009.

Divorce statistics was highest among men and women aged 40 to 44, with a reported 11 married couples out of every thousand divorcing last year.

The rise marks the first annual increase in divorces since 2003 when there were 153,065 break-ups, up from 147,735 the previous year.

The figures also shows a stark contrast to those released by the US Census Bureau earlier this year, which found that the overall divorce rates in the US has declined.

However, a break down of said statistics show that there is a disproportionate number of divorces amongst African Americans with an estimated 11.5 percent of breakups, compared to 10 percent for white couples, 7.8 percent for Latinos and 4.9 percent for asians.
